Talocan District - Wrench Werks - Early Morning

"BUZZZZzzzzzzzZZZZZZzzzzzZZZZ-WHAM!!!"

Alric peeked over his pillow with half-opened bloodshot eyes. His hand had shot out with a mind of its own and clobbered his alarm clock. Again. He slowly withdrew his claws, as if the clock would flip out and bite him at any moment. He continued sleepily glaring at the offensive machine, even after his hand had returned to the safety of his bed.

When did I go to sleep again?

His mental gearing slowly started to grind into motion again, and the previous nights events hazily came to focus. Worked late. Went and grabbed dinner at Clutter's Cantina. Stayed for the music. Ran up outrageous tab. Walked Fina home after bar closed... or was it Nazza? Did I walk her home or did she walk me home?

He lazily rolled his head over with all the effort of a freighter turning into a dock, and eyed the other half of his bed. Nope... definitely walked one of em' home. With great effort, as though pulling himself over the last cliff to the tops of the Starfall Mountains-

Alric got out of bed. He wasn't exactly a morning person.

Thirty minutes later he was showered and dressed, and milled about his little upstairs apartment for a bit, mainly to put on some java and find something to eat. His pocket data-scroll blinked irritatingly at the corner of his vision the entire time, and he refused to deal with it until he had coffee in hand. If it's another tax collector I will seriously murder someone.

Coffee in hand, he swiped up the little PDA and checked the message...

"Have a good night sweetheart! Thanks for the company!" And under that a blurry picture of a- ooooh. Right. And it was blurry from a pair of lip prints on the camera lens. Mmhmm... walked Fina home.

PDA in pocket, coffee mug in one hand and coffee pot in the other, Alric trotted downstairs to get the shop ready for business. As in, turning on the Open sign and unbolting the front door. Which he did, then set the heated coffee pot on the corner of the counter next to some clean mugs. It was still a little early, maybe twenty or so minutes until nine, but that never mattered when you ran your own business.

He had a couple customers coming in to pick up different odds and ends, but he didn't have a specific time for any of them. Sipping his coffee, he turned on some music from the big holoscroll hanging behind the counter and started to blink away the rest of his hangover. He still had a couple of projects he wanted to get started on... maybe he should hire an apprentice. Have someone run this half while he locked himself in the garage with his coffee and projects... Yeah... the most likely of scenarios.

The lights of the Norvondire bakery flipped on. The store front was clean and tidy with a small cash register sitting on top. It was simple. No need for a big fancy store, not yet anyways. Devin locked the door behind him, before heading into the kitchen.

Although the lights were on, Pathway Bakery was not yet open for business. There was dough that need to be shaped, cakes that needed decorating, and... Devin glanced into the refrigerator, more chocolate apparently needed to be purchased, he was almost out.
"That will have to wait until my lunch break." Devin noted as he dug around in the refrigerator.
Many things needed doing before he was ready to open for the day.

He pulled out a batch of buttercream frosting. It had gone 'flat' overnight. He took it over to the mixer to be reconstituted for cake decoration. While that was running, Devin pulled out several pastries that were made the night before, so he could put them in the display case. They were mostly quick bread items, like scones. The first customers would be expecting breakfast, after all. Finally, he got pulled out dough for muffins to bake. He could have made them last night along with the other quick breads, but muffins always sold better if they were fresh from the oven.

Once the muffins were in the oven, the buttercream ready to go, and a few other odds and ends taken care of, Devin unlocked the door and flipped the sign to open.
Pathway Bakery was open for business.

Solus didn't seem to happy with the current situation. This might've either been because the last meal he had gotten had been a rather small creature he had never seen before, or because his dear companion had decided to march through half the night to the borderlands of Theophanies. Annoyingly she had talked about 'great oppurtunity', 'lots of riches' and other stuff.

Basically stuff she had made up as an excuse to leave Theophanies at least once in her life, but she didn't notice that. Solus? He remained as dignified hat-decoration and looked at every person that passed them with either disdain or disinterest, leaving most dreamkeepers who came past them wonder more about the ryuu-neko rather than the rundown girl beneath it. Not that she particularly cared.

Her day had started a bit before the sun had appeared far behind the temples of the spirits, much to her partners annoyance. She had left directly for a certain hiking trail that ran by the side of the Eridan River. It took some time but at some point she finally had reached the point, where buildings weren't around anymore. Just the beautiful nature of the Dreamworld.

Here, first thing she had found had been a tent, with travellers inside it. Unlike the day before, her hands actually were up to the job and she had been able to quietly take a bit of the money from them. Fienna had decided against taking everything, somebody might just notice, and had left immediately after she had also plundered there food.

„Today will be a wonderful day, Soli,“ she said, standing on the hiking path, behind her, the temples of the spirit rose and the buildings of Theophanies, with their fluted columns, too, bread in her mouth. For any stranger it would've been a sight that they'd keep for the rest of their life. For her, it was a parting from home. Though she hadn't decided how far she should take it with the exploration now. If the spirits willed it, she would be home by nightfall, if not, then she would simply find another alley to sleep in. She reckoned even Norvondire had some of those.

The ryuu-neko gave a small sigh, looking fairly bored around. The fact that there was nobody here between fields and woods who could look at his gracefulness was utterly disappointing for Solus. So, rather than answering her declaration he just decided to pout about his great misery. It didn't help that she happily marched on, ignoring him.

Fienna had only heard stories about other districts and had never found the time to venture near the Sabbaton-towers, so she guessed that this would be an experience and now that she had some money, maybe she'd get decent food there, cooked or something like that. The girl had high hopes but in the end, it had to remain with Serapis to decide whether she'd have that much luck.

Market centre, Margate District - Morning

"... But I'm sorry to inform you that the position you have applied for has already been filled. Feel free to apply when we have another opening available."
END OF MESSAGE.

Karden sighed as he looked at the blurry figure on his data scroll screen dissappear. This was the second time he had been refused a job this month, and he was running out of both money and patience fast.

He closed the scroll and stuffed it back in his pocket. He had gotten the data scroll as a gift from his last employer in lieu of a payoff when he was made redundant, and it had since become of great use to Karden, not just for finding jobs, but also for keeping him from going mad with boredom. It was also one of the last few possessions he owned, not that he had many in the first place.

Karden sighed again as he began to make the journey into town, pulling out a battered wallet from his other pocket as he did so.

Twenty lucre. That's only gonna last me a week, at the most. And I can't ask for any more favours from Vann... Just gotta hope something comes up by the end of the month.

As he walked through the small, empty alleyways leading to the market centre, the familiar sound of merchants already hawking their wares started to fill Karden's ears. He made his way out of the alley, down the already bustling stall-lined street, and eventually turned and entered a small shop.

"Just a coffee, please." Karden said to the dreamkeeper at the counter. He pulled a few small notes from his wallet and placed them on the till as the drink arrived seconds later. Spotting an empty table nearby, he pulled out a chair and sat down, resting his head in his palms as he began to decide his next plan of action.

It's gonna be a long day...

A few customers had stopped by to come pick up something for breakfast on their way to work. Things had been slow so far since he first opened. He didn't have much money for advertisement, so most of his customers were those who found out about the new bakery when the smell of muffins, cakes, and other aromatic treats filled the air and led them to the bakery.

Currently, Devin was taking advantage of this and was literally letting pies cool near an open window. He had even set up a fan to help the aroma along. He still had plenty of breakfast pastries on display, but he was busy in the kitchen making more goods for when the crowd came looking for a snack during lunch and dessert during dinner.

Sometimes she cursed the lack of money other people had. No matter how much she stole, it was never enough. She had tried to get on a boat the moment she reached a small port. That would've gotten her straight into the main part of Norvondire, but no, 'Not enough lucre' they had said. Grumbling and with that ryuu-neko revelling in it's own glory, she stumbled forward.

Norvondire looked fairly different from Theophanies, she had to admit. Where she walked, she could see some huge castles far away, maybe guarding the Starfall mountains or something. She had remained on the hiking trail for a while now, walking past vast fields, forests and lots of other cool and pretty stuff. It took her a while but after another hour or so she had finally stepped into the life of Norvondire.

From afar it had looked different and, it's inhabitants aside, it still was. She didn't quite understand architecture, so she didn't quite care about the way the buildings rose from the ground, she just took a look at whatever she found interesting at that particular moment. Sightseeing was only ended with her stomach grumbling. Normally she would've ignored this.

"How about us grabbing a bite, Solus?" she asked, looking up. The ryuu-neko gave a small purring sound, which she took as a 'yes'. She then moved forward, looking around where to eat something.

Alric stifled a yawn as he gingerly placed the last spring into the regulator he was rebuilding. He nodded happily and took a long sip of his coffee. That was the last bit of work for the day, at least out of his comissions, and now he got to patiently wait for customers.

Not really his favorite past-time.

A few people had been by to pick up repairs or buy replacements, so his register had been comfortably lined with lucre for the day. It was nice to have a day or two where he didn't have to worry about paying the bills. He eyed the wall of clocks with a sigh, he still had a couple hours before he could either escape or work on his own projects. He coooould work on his own stuff at the front counter, but he didn't want to have something illegal out and have the wrong kind of customer come in.

So instead, he dropped the bell over the door and walked to the back, leaving the workshop door open so he could hear if anyone came in. He flicked the lights on, and went to the the single thin strip of window at the back of the workshop. Below it, three long rows of diony plants were suspended, with a series of tubes and drip feeds going to different plants.

Alric checked all the different beakers and bottles running to the plants, noting how much of what had been absorbed on a clipboard he had hung on the wall nearby. A long row of jars filled with all sorts of juices, flavorings, and some more... obscure things.

He tooks his time, making sure his numbers were right, and then started adding some of the juices and things to the beakers. It took a little while before he was satisfied with everything, and a few minutes later he was back in the front shop, swirling the remnants of his coffee and watching the clocks.

Just a few more minutes.

The smell of food reached Fienna's nose. Looking about, she could see Pathway Bakery stand not all that far from where she was now. The promise of food hung in the air around her.

For the first time in what feels like an eternity, Kurgen quietly, peacefully wakes up.

Struggling to clear his vision, Kurgen rolls out of bed with exaggerated effort, and looks around for a clock. 11:00 already? For a moment, he panics. Oh spirits I'm late for work holy crap I have to shower and where's my gun and- He pauses. Wait. I'm not working today.... Stifling a small smile, he saunters downstairs into the kitchen and begins pouring himself a cup of coffee.

Oh, I'm going to ENJOY today. He thinks. Already, Kurgen is writing out a list of things to do in his head. Movies, a fancy steak dinner, maybe he'll call that girl he met last week- oh! That new Nightmares album came out yesterday, he's been dying for something new to listen to...

Kurgen's rampant train of thought is rudely interrupted by his messenger vibrating away on the table. Upset at this distraction, he stomps over to the table, ripping the messenger off of its charger and mashing the "Call" button.

"WHAT?!?" he yells.

For a moment there's silence. Then laughter. "You know, for not working today, you're still hilariously uptight."

Kurgen sighs, then smiles to himself, recognizing the voice of his partner. "You can never let your guard down, rookie. You never know when something will happen. You always have to be sharp, ready, alert, and-"

"Whoa, whoa, whoa, calm down, old man. I just wanted to make sure you were gonna be alright today, I know it's been eons since you've been outside the station." Marrick snaps back. Kurgen can practically hear the young man's snark dripping through the messenger.

"Yes, yes, I'm fine, you ***. We still on for drinks tonight?" he replies.

"Of course! The Golden Bander at 8?"

"You really need to start hanging out at other bars, Marrick. Still, you had better bring your A-game, I'm not going let you embarrass yourself at quarters again." (author's note: for lack of better DK-universe drinking game. :( )

"Oh please, the way I remember it, I spent half the night carrying YOUR drunk carcass through the bar." laughs Marrick.

"HA! All that fermente must have scrambled your memory. Firstly, I doubt you could even DRAG me anywhere, not to mention you ended up covering that toilet in-"

"Whoops, newcasecameingottagoseeyoulatergramps!" The messenger abruptly clicked and went silent.

Kurgen couldn't help but smile. He liked Marrick. The rookie was young, but was still an incredible officer. Only a year on the force, and he had been instrumental in bringing down over a dozen key players in the Talocan Street Clans. Still, Kurgen couldn't help but worry slightly that all the success was going to inflate Marrick's ego and get him into trouble. But, for now, it was alright. Nothing wrong with being proud of yourself when you deserve it.

Gulping down his coffee, Kurgen lumbers back upstairs and into his personal gym. After a quick workout, he showers and puts on the only casual set of clothing he owns: an old, loose t-shirt advertising some long since disbanded rock outfit, and some badly worn baggy shorts. Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to buy some new clothes, he thinks.

Shoveling down a quick breakfast, Kurgen collects his "essentials": Wallet, keys, messenger, and his personal springer pistol, and makes his way to the front door. He can't remember the last time he walked out the door going somewhere besides work. It's been too long. With all the activity surrounding the local Clans lately, he's been working his hide off. The last time Kurgen took a day off was for his birthday, and that was close to six months ago.

Pausing briefly in front of his door, he takes a deep breath. Look out world, today is going to be a GOOD DAY! With entirely too much enthusiasm, he mashes down on the door handle.

...

Need to unlock, THEN open...

((EDIT: Changed partner's name from Marin to Marrick, slight adjustments to the conversation))
