Reid was approaching the coffee place that was across the street from the castle. Paska was with him. He looked up from the Data-pad where he had pulled up an article on the "prison break". He had been smirking, knowing his actions were giving authority figures problems. That would show them.

Stopping a ways off from the early morning crowds, Mute looked down at Paska.

"I think it would be a good idea to split up and watch different sides of the castle. You want to cover the front or the back of the castle?"

About an hour after his meeting with the General, Kurgen found himself being searched and inspected at the third of a half dozen new impromptu security check points leading into the Torrance Holding Facility. He could understand the heightened sense of security, but this was the second time he'd been cavity searched so far, and it was getting old FAST. Still, in an impressive feat of restraint, Kurgen managed to maintain his patience right up to the point where he saw the seven inch probe making its way around behind him.

"I think we're done here." he grumbled as he wrenched his belongings from a nearby squirrel. The advantage to being a seven foot tall, walking battering ram is that people tended to get out of your way when they saw you weren't going to stop. After only a few minutes (compared to the hours it likely would have taken otherwise), Kurgen stood within the prison's grounds.

He'd been here before. Usually to interview detainees for various reasons, or for prisoner escort, or whatever else, but this was the first time he had ever seen it so BUSY. A bee's nest worth of officers and Safety troopers swarmed the yard, all of them armed and armored like they were expecting an apocalypse.

Three areas had been cordoned off: the severely burned main watch tower, a ten-foot area near the vehicle yard, and a slightly larger area near a wall along the perimeter fence. Each cordon was patrolled by a pair of very dangerous looking dreamkeepers, each covered head to toe in pure black armor designed for high protection, total anonymity, and extreme mobility. Extractors, specially trained units used for especially unruly or dangerous prisoners, riot control, or (on very rare occasions) above-maximum level security. The guys that even hardened Safety Troops didn't mess with.

As Kurgen surveyed his surroundings, a short, fat, sickly-green colored pony trotted up to him, yelling and shouting at every person that crossed his path, finally stopping a few feet in front of the ram, who greeted him with a raised eyebrow. Several moments passed before the little man could say anything. Obviously it had been a long time since he had spent any significant time away from his desk, a thick sheen of sweat poured down his face as he held his knees, gasping for air.

"YOU!" he panted "Gurken, right? 'Bout time yuh showed. Ain't no one 'round here knows how to keep a skHEedule anymore. Follow me!" With that, he spun on his heel and heaved his frame towards the tower, presumably where he wanted Kurgen to begin his investigation. The Extractors standing near the door didn't move as they approached, but Kurgen could feel their eyes watching his every move, ready to pounce if he so much as blinked the wrong way.

The top of the tower was a mess. It looked bad from the ground, but standing up there was even worse. The whole area was burnt and scorched, jet black save for a greyish spot outlining where the poor watch-man had been.

"Well? What 're ya waitin' fore! Git learnin'!"

Yuri slipped into the ally behind Bad Brambles, biting the inside of her mouth as the news from the cafe drifted over to her. Geez, maybe Mute's distraction was TOO good. Well, at least people would focus on the prison instead of the real target. Hm...

She was the only one there, so she had to wait for Shala. To be expected, since Yuri knew the place better. She had a stalking ground every couple blocks, it seemed, so it was like all the shortcuts were on the back of her hand.

Yuri leaned against the wall of the alley and waited for about 10 seconds before she realized something. With quick movements, she pulled a nearby trashcan in front of the back door of Bad Brambles. That took care of that. Now, just to wait. While tapping her fingers against the wall. Ug, already on end.

Shala's apartment was little more than a carpeted square with a bed, a window, and a chest. It was crisply arranged despite the Spartan furnishings. Hard to tell anyone lived there.

The little woman moonwalked across the room to the beat of Mildly Grimy's latest ridiculous single, drifting up from the music store below. The next minute or so was spent dancing around to thumping bass riffs and gathering materials -- rock-climbing implements from the chest, a tool belt from under the bed, a gray ski-mask for the kid. After frightening away the window birds with jazz-hands for the hell of it, she took a breath and quit goofing off.

Within two minutes she descended the fire escape stairs and vaulted over the railing to land crouched on all fours. OW FREAKING SPIRITS. She bit back a string of curses as her bruised limbs screamed. Wrestling her nervous system into cooperation, she forced her eyes back open.

Oh look, there was the kid. Oh, and she'd blocked off the exit. Good.

"Hey there." She stood, winced, dusted herself off. "Did you want to go over anything, or should we cut straight to the plan of entry?" She tugged the ski-mask from one of the packs in her tool belt and tossed it to her. "Oh, and here, present. Just to hide your face."

Yuri caught the mask with an open mouth, then looked up at the open window.

What the...? She lives above the place?!

Then she noticed what Shala had thrown her. A ski mask? Ug, suffocating headgear. Why did...? Oh. Oh yeah, she was a local. She could name half a dozen people off the top of her head that could pick her out from a crowd. A dozen more if she thought about it. No harm to check why she gave this to her, though.

"I don't need to really go over anything, really, but...why a ski mask? Uh, is this to keep people from recognizing me?"

"Bingo, kiddo." She made a useless effort to smooth the wrinkles from her clothes, gave up, and readjusted her equipment. "Security footage is forever, unless you find the tape and burn it. Might as well be safe. No worries, there's no need to wear it until we get in there -- that would just look weird."

Shala tugged up her sleeve and brought up an aerial photo of the castle facility on her datapad. She pointed to the northeast section. "This general area is where we'll be entering, once we get the signal. It was repaired a few years ago and the stones' mortar is weaker. I brought climbing gear." She patted her tool belt and indicated the iron-on Hiker's Heaven logo patch. "For all anyone knows, we're just outdoorsy-types heading for the Starfall reserve. We'll take the path that runs about a quarter mile north of the facility, then find some place to bunker down and wait. Sound good?"

Yuri gave the ski mask another look, then stuck it in the side pocket of her backpack.

"Yeah, that sounds fine. And it seems that we're all ready. They've already started counting. "

She looked at Shala and smiled. It couldn't mask the flash of fright, then excitement, in her eyes. The mission was underway.

"Now, let's get in our hiding places, before It gets to 10."

Paska looked up at the Mute and said without hesitation, "The back. I'll have a better grasp of what to look for back there. Keep me updated on what comes thought the front, okay?" He thought back to the cart that unloaded prisoners into the back of the facility. He tapped his earpiece with a surprisingly serious look before leaping between the legs of the crowds and towards a concealed area where he could observe without drawing too much attention. A big tree would manage.

Castle Sauber – Front Gate

Bix had filed off the water-taxi with the other throng of people, the fact that he hadn’t paid the fare seeming lost in the bustle of people. He took a moment to collect himself and check that he still had everything. The bag Alric had given him was still clutched vice-like in his hand, and a pat-down revealed everything had made the commute as necessary.

He didn’t know where everyone else was, but he had a job to do, and it seemed to be in everyone’s best interest to get in there and get things done. The morning was cool, and the sun was gradually beginning to disappear behind the clouds as a front swept through the area. By the time he was halfway to Castle Sauber, the cloud had gone from a nice, lofty blue to a deep, miserable grey.

Doing his best to look like he had every reason to be there, the lanky creature walked up to the front entrance, the massive double doors flanked by two security personnel. He paused, not having any ID handy, and started to speak up when-

“Bix! Ah! Mr. Nixin, so glad you could get here in such a hurry.” A figure popped from around the corner, an old colleague… one that still had managed to keep his job in the current environment, “Dr. McAth, I’m sure you remember me.” The short, exasperated looking mouse flashed his ID to the two security guards, “I’ll handle checking him in lads.”

The short yellow mouse hustled Bix through security with some speed, and had him check in with the front desk, who worked a few minutes getting him set up with an ID so he could get around the facility. The little mouse wiped his brow and looked up… way up, to Bix, “She goes on a complete warpath whenever one of her projects goes awry. Best thing that happened to you, going freelance I mean. Must beat this rot by a ton.” He waved a paw towards an elevator, “Comeon’, I’ll take you to our problem center.”

Castle Sauber – Two Blocks Away

Creeper laid out her gear for a final re-check, and Avalanche did the same next to her, though it was hard to tell if the younger hoodlum was merely shadowing the older thief or had done this before. They checked everything, including the climbing hooks, and then started bundling everything up where they’d have easy access to it in the future. It only took them fifteen minutes or so before they were completely set and ready to go.

By now, the clouds had rolled in, darkening the morning and promising a dreary, overcast day. The clouds seemed pump with rain, but none had started falling yet. It was good and bad… and they both knew it.

“So how are we doing this?” Yuri asked, pulling the mask from her pouch.

Castle Sauber – The Outskirts

-Out Back-

Paska was in luck, as there was a small park that swept out from the back of the castle. Well tended trees mingled together under immaculate grass near the picturesque castle. He had a great view over the rear loading dock, as well as a good view of the comings and goings of that area. After some scrambling and some adjusting, the pint-sized creature managed to get situated nicely in the tree… now came the waiting.

-The Front-

The Mute had found a nice little café out front, and ordered a nice warm drink from the cute greenish squirrel-girl behind the counter before he sat down with a book as though to begin working on a writing of some kind. He had another novel nearby to read… and had settled in as just another café-goer with too much time on his hands. Fit right in.

He had a great view of the front entrance, though he might have to move as the day went on to lose anyone’s suspicion. If he found out when the café had a shift change, he could always leave and come back… and would skip on loosing his spot. He’d have to figure something out.

Castle Sauber?

Everyone assumed Atlas was somewhere doing something.

Thing is, nobody knew where she was and what it was she was doing.

Maybe it was better if they didn’t.

Reid sipped his coffee. It was nice to have gotten an advance before the job. It was nice to have some spending money for once.

He absent-mindedly turned a page in the book he had gotten. He wasn't actually reading it, his eyes kept glancing up at the castle often enough, he wouldn't miss any important comings and goings.
