Survival Horror - Anduruna

Postby Chemical Cutthroat on Sat Oct 01, 2011 8:51 am

This whole thing had been a complete mess. No organization. No solid reports. Nothing over the airwaves that could even be considered believable. When the outbreak started, the news blared for everyone to stay in their homes. They kept reminding everyone how the government had it under control, how they had nothing to worry about.

But you should definitely report in if someone in your household isn't feeling well. Look's a little under the weather? Is that a sniffle? Maybe they might be infected.

The panic was the worst part, but even that didn't start until houses started being 'quarantined'... with a cadre of shock troopers coming in to clear it out. It took the public a while before they realized no-one was being carted out afterwards. Sometimes there number of safety troops that went in was more than the number that came out.

Now the undead ruled Anduruna. Small pockets of survivors camped here and there. The smart ones, the troublemakers, the brutes... the lucky ones. Each day, their numbers shrank as undead hands pulled them down, or someone turned a corner right into the jaws of the undead. Others became paranoid, turning on their fellow survivors before they had a chance to infect them.

This is the story of those few, still alive and fighting... for something.

That had bought them some time.

The handful of them had been holed out all morning in one of the small district police stations. Not even half a dozen against what could only have numbered in the hundreds. Clearing out the station had been stressful enough, now they were barricaded inside, trying to plot out their next move, even as they tried to figure out who was who. Introductions had been skipped, the simple fact that they were breathing was enough to garner trust in the melee of fur and claws earlier.

They had made it through the morning mostly unscathed, and after throwing a couple benches against the door they had a few moments to pull the place apart and look for anything useful. Food, ammo, other survivors. It had been a week since the outbreak started, and already the city was a complete mess.

A few radios crackled half-heartedly on charging docks, sucking at whatever power still remained on the circuit...

Thankfully the drunk pirate they had pulled out of one of the water-taxi was proving to be rather useful in a scrap, and if what he was saying was true, they might have a perfect way out of this mess.

Too bad it was on the other side of the city.

Someone lopped off a rotting hand as it ventured through the slats in the boarded up window, the four (five) survivors catching their breath as the hordes outside moaned endlessly, as though mocking them and they dependency on the air. Damp, chilly air sweeping down from the mountains into Ruskol. The heavy building they were holed up in was keeping most of the chill out for now, but the zombies would get in sooner or later.

They needed a plan... and they needed each other. They had proven that just cutting through the creatures to get here. Here being a messed up mall of some kind. It didn't take them any effort to carve through the hordes, but they were still fresh and rested... well... most of them were. For all the killin' he was doing, the pirate seemed a little off... and terribly confused as to how he was no longer in the vicinity of his prized vessel.

Devin tiredly leaned against a wall. He had managed to decapitate several zombies. His dad on the other hand, was still shooting at the torso and not the head. Hard to ignore training he supposed. But with the help of the... Pirate? Captain Wane, Leon, and Nick, the newly formed group cut its way through to safety in the mall.
For now, at least, they were safe.

Devin busied himself with looting a few stores for supplies. He'd let his dad do the talking for now.
(I spend 1 luck point for a random event.)

---
Valido surveyed the rest of the group he and his son had just run into with a hard frown. They included a pirate, which was a fancy term for criminal, a very fancily dressed (if it weren't for the grime covering him that is) man in a white suit, and another gentlemen around his son's age. While they had done well fighting together today, Valido worried they would come to blows over the coming days as the group's goals came into conflict.

The pirate, while a criminal, quite possibly had a ship to get away from the city in. While better than his original plan of trekking across the dessert, he still needed to convince the pirate to try and swing by Eridu Delta to grab his other two kids... and his ex-wife too, he supposed.

The man in the dirty white suit proved very capable in a fight, taking out quite a few zombies.
... and that worried Valido. Where did a supposed ordinary citizen learn to fight like that? His son seemed to know him though.

Nick seemed the most normal of the group and proved just as capable in a fight as the pirate did.

He cleared his throat.
"Well... Now that we all have a moment to ourselves, we should discuss what our next course of action is."

(Kojiki - Police Station)

For the first time in his life, Marrick was at a total loss for words. In just his four short years as a police officer, he's seen everything from old ladies getting stuck on toilet seats to entire families splattered across their living rooms with more blood than seemed possible painting the walls. But nothing could compare to this.

Zombies. Legions of them. For a while Marrick had been holding onto the hope that this was simply an isolated incident, that maybe it would be over soon, but after a week, things have only gotten worse. Although no one really knew how it all started, the end result was all that mattered. The once gleaming city of Anduruna had been reduced to a stinking bastion for rotting, hungry, walking corpses. The buildings themselves even seemed to have died, the flo-wood turning grey and twisted as the undead blight permeated the walls.

But, all things considered, he couldn't help but feel slightly fortunate. He had recently stumbled upon a few other survivors and so far, it seemed to be going well. They had managed to clear out a small police station and were now using it as an impromptu fortress. The rough barricades they constructed weren't going to last super long, but it at least offered some temporary respite from the shuffling masses.

Selecting the most comfortable looking chair he could find, Marrick plopped himself down and began stripping off the armor plating from his torso. As guilty as he felt taking the armor of a dead Shock Trooper, he valued his own survival over honors that, admittedly, probably weren't going to mean anything soon. Besides, it fit his short, stocky structure well and had already proved to be helpful in shrugging off a lot of clawing and biting, leaving Marrick with only a few incidental cuts and bruises.

Once he had the armor plates stacked neatly on the desk in front of him, the iridescent blue gorilla gave himself a quick look over. His once-neat dreadlocks were now a tangled mess, caked with dried zombie blood, and the black lightning bolt tattoos that adorned his face and forearms had faded ever-so-slightly. He sported a number of minor injuries, though thankfully most of them came from the simple wear and tear of trying to survive for a week against... well, putting it bluntly, unholy creatures that outnumbered him, quite literally, a million to one.

Marrick frowned. It had just occurred to him that, even though he'd been fighting for his life with these people for some time now, he had no idea who any of them were. I guess now would be as good a time as any for introductions...

Quickly sweeping the room to get a head count, Marrick cleared his throat. "Is everyone alright?"

Leon had been very quiet since he joined the rag-tag team he was now a part of, which wasn't like him. He was still pretty upset about his whole immediate family being dead, which was natural, to be fair.

Leon had been lucky enough to be in the company of one Devin Path, a friend he had met at a café a couple years back. Funny story, Devin actually worked at the café as a cook, before going off and opening his own bakery. Good guy; Leon liked him a lot. It was a huge relief to actually be with someone he knew, especially in the given circumstances.

Everyone else was a stranger to the fox. Leon had never met Devin's father before now, and the drunken pirate didn't seem like the type to make friends. Then there was the odd white cat, completely mute. Leon hadn't brought himself to try and communicate with him, and just trusted that he could pull his sh*t together in an emergency.

They were stopping to rest for a moment. Great, excellent. Leon had realized that since the apocalypse started, resting was much more of a luxury. All the work they had to do just to stay alive made a crappy wooden bench seem like paradise. Except without the actual paradise.

'Well... Now that we all have a moment to ourselves, we should discuss what our next course of action is.' Devin's father spoke up. Leon was in the middle of stretching, getting his muscles to release.

"Phew...well. I'm pretty sure the big idea is to get to the Captain's ship," he said quietly and gestured toward Wane "Correct me if I'm wrong, but he said it was in the Kojiki district. That's a way's away. Our best bet would to be to get our hands on a map and take all the back-roads we can find; we won't survive a minute on the streets. Hell, better yet, find roof access and see how far we can go from up there. That sound about right?" He asked, eying everyone.

Valido nodded. "That sounds like a fine plan, but I don't think a Map will be necessary. At least not for Ruskol, anyways. I live here and know my way around pretty well."
He rested his rifle over his shoulder, looking over to where Devin was. While he was clearly unhappy that his son's actions were basically equated to looting, he could not deny that it was important and essential to their survival.

He shook his head. "Right, so shall we head out? We can head out the back of the mall and take Slurry street. That should take us to my office. There should be better supplies there and we can stop for the night there.

Lilly looked up from the corner of two walls on the inside of the building.

The little tigress was as far from any openings as possible. She was curled in a ball, holding her legs. Being only 9, this was quite traumatic, and the others at least had powers; she had yet to find hers.

She stood up, brushing the dirt off her shorts and tank top.

"I-I think so..." She muttered, hardly audible.

The child looked up at Marrick with fright and innocence, before now she had never even been in a fight with anyone.
"W-what are we g-gonna do?"

So it had come to this had it? It had come to the point where the whole of society had broken down. There was no law, no protection...no tomorrow. Just a few weeks ago Kylarin would've dismissed any talk of something like this happening with a look of disdain towards whoever had mentioned it.

Now, though...well, it was clear what kind of situation had unfolded before Kylarin's, and every other unfortunate person's, very eyes. At first, the Charr refused to believe it could affect him or anyone he knew, although some form of doubt and uncertainty began biting away at the back of his mind every day the infection wasn't stopped. Soon, the infection was in his own back garden.

The actions he took that followed that were something that Kylarin would rather not talk about to anyone, let alone any random stranger. It seemed that now, however, he was putting his life in the hands of the four strangers he had just been fighting for his life with, as were they. This wasn't a situation he envisioned himself being in a few weeks ago...

After finding the darkest, most solitary part of the room the five of them were in, he walked towards it and planted his back against the cold, metal wall. He then slowly slid down it until he hit the ground before cupping his hands around his face. He needed to forget...

Kylarin slowly shut his eyes but he could never get the pictures of recent events out of his mind; the death of so many innocent people as they were captured by the cold hands of the infection, the seemingly never-ending struggle of holding off so many zombies, the emotional tidal-wave he felt just before killing his parents. He just needed to forget.

Kylarin opened his eyes once again and glanced up at the source of a voice. He wasn't alone and for the first time in his life he was very thankful for that. "I'm fine." Kylarin replied in a deep, rather shy tone. He was never one for long introductions and despite everything, today was no different.

He then gave a quick look at the quite obviously terrified girl who had been with them. He really did feel sorry for her; this was no place for someone of her age, yet she had no way out of it. As much as Kylarin hated to admit it, she would have to learn. Fast.

Ruskol…He just hate this bloody district. It was on land. Even worse, it was near mountains. The enemy of the seas.

The black macaw feathered dog sat lounged on a stray bench, half feathered and half furred dog tail sweeping side to side brushing the ground. His black triangular hat with its large purple feather rested comfortably on his head. The colored bead strings rested on his shoulders as he drank from his beaded sake of mixed alcohols, pondering.

Unfortunately, another sea, the sea of events, brought him here. It brought him away from the familiar ocean. It brought him away from the crew. Worse, it brought him away from his love, the Twin Victory. He prayed for it safety, and not just for the sake of for his and his ragtag group survival, but for the sake of her beauty. No treasure like that should fall prey to such ugly destruction.

With his usually half-lidded expression, he gazed about the mall. Unorganized with products of various kinds and bodies of the fallen, the mall was a wreak. Trash piles and broken glass, most stores were clearly looted days before.

He looked at his own attire. A week ago, for the first time in three months, he actually had it clean. The once shiny boots were, again, scoffed and tarnished. His knee-length silk blue overcoat was gored and bloodied. The red blood disgraced it. “And I just had this re-dyed.”he thought.
The black linen pants and brown shirt were likewise. The only objects that seemed untouched were his black hat, red bandana tied to his neck, and the gemmed silver compass necklace that rested on his chest.

Again, he looked at the surrounding environment, but this time he took notice of its few occupants. A cat like young man was entering one of the many empty stores. The other three were grouped up a few feet from him. The group consisted of a blue goat about his age, a red fox, and another cat, but white.

The older goat cleared his throat. “Well... Now that we all have a moment to ourselves, we should discuss what our next course of action is.”

The red fox responded quietly, but enough for him to hear. “Phew...well. I'm pretty sure the big idea is to get to the Captain's ship," He gestured toward the lounging captain "Correct me if I'm wrong, but he said it was in the Kojiki district. That's a way's away. Our best bet would to be to get our hands on a map and take all the back-roads we can find; we won't survive a minute on the streets. Hell, better yet, find roof access and see how far we can go from up there. That sound about right?”

The goat nodded. "That sounds like a fine plan, but I don't think a Map will be necessary. At least not for Ruskol, anyways. I live here and know my way around pretty well." He rested his shock trooper rifle over his shoulder, looking over to where the looting cat was. He had a face of disappointment.

He shook his head. "Right, so shall we head out? We can head out the back of the mall and take Slurry Street. That should take us to my office. There should be better supplies there and we can stop for the night there.”

Wane was disappointed. “Tha it? Tha’s your plan?” The words were slurred as usual.

“Not fa-thinkin’ are ye?” He took a swig from his sake, not even looking at them.

“We need a map, lads. Maps ten’ ta give escape routes when the main plan fails. Maps plan future routes beyon’ this district.”

He strapped his sake to his belt and pulled out a gun from his overcoat and began fiddling with it. It wasn’t normal pistol. It was a flare gun. It was their only ticket to reach the ship. If the Victory was off shore, which no doubt it was, the flare gun would signal his arrive to whatever dock or beach he was.

His first mate, Mayala, was smart of enough to stay off sure and loyal enough to not abandon him. He knew that she would run back to one of their nearest hideouts, restock, and return for him. He loved her loyalty and even more, she was both clever and violent to keep her and the crew alive.

“How do ye think I lasted this long throughout me life?”

Valido glared coldly at the sonofa***** pirate. "You misunderstand me... 'sir'." He used the term lightly. "In case you didn't realize... I'm a shock trooper. My office is a military installation. We can get heavily detailed maps on every district. Did you get all of that, or has the drink softened your brain too much?"

Valido gripped his springer rifle to indicate that this is what they were doing, at least for today, and distention would not be tolerated.

Wane continued to look at his flare gun, checking for any flaws that would prevent its operation. He was aware of the goat’s cop status. His posture and, now attitude, confirmed it. Probably explains the disappointment he had for the looting cat.

Ignoring the glare, he responded with a half-interested tone. “I’m aware of tha’, mate. But I know that ye share wit’ others of ya kind.”

Satisfied that the device was in perfect condition, he holstered it back in his coat. Placing his hands behind his head, he continued. “I bet tha others have taken a gander of ya office, whether it been fellows or strangers. Many people would visit cause of those same reasons.”

He closed his eyes and shifted his hat over his face. “In short, mate, don’t expect it to have everything ya believe it would have.”

He wasn’t being coldhearted, in his mind. He was simply stating probable facts. It’s good to stay in reality rather than put to heart a hope that could fall and demoralized them. Leading his crew taught him that years ago.

“Oh, by the way, it’s gonna ta take more than this ta soften this ‘ead.” He tapped his sake in which doing so brought the desire to drink again.
